Welcome to my blog!

Thank you for taking the time to stop by and visit! We hope to share with you our journey of raising a child with Achondroplasia, the most common type of dwarfism. If this is your first time here, please start by reading Caitlyn's Story. It will share the beginning of her life with you. Enjoy!

Another Preschool Update

Well, there is good news and there is bad news:

The good news - Caitlyn qualified for the Head Start Preschool Program
The bad news - It is MANDATORY that she attends 5 days a week from 7:30-11:30

So we obviously are not going to be going with the Head Start Preschool - bummer.

I called Child Action after getting off the phone with the director at Head Start. They took all of our info and were able to give me a list of several preschools in our town, both Child Care Centers and Family Centers. Well, the good news here is that there are so many near us, the bad news is that most of them run about $150 a week for part time - way more that we wanted to or are willing to spend. Back to square one. I then decided to do my own looking. We have some playgroup friends that are in a preschool program through our local parks and rec department. So I called the office and got some info about their program. There are several different school sites where they run these preschool programs. The one our friends go to is a 3 day a week program, however we are just looking for a 2 days per week. Luckily one of the other school runs one that fits our needs and it's only $18 a day - for a month it's roughly about $145, a much better sounding number. We're going to make a visit to the site to check them out and see if it is something that will work for us. Wish us luck (again)!!

On another note, Caitlyn qualifies for Speech Therapy and we will be starting this coming Friday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Augh! $150 a month?? Whew... we pay $150 a week minimum! LOL

Of course, we're full time all the way around, so it's gonna be more, but still... Man, LA is expensive!

Right now Caitlin's daycare is $185 a week, and that's pretty much the cheapest we've found that we're actually happy with... Evan's afterschool care runs just under $500 a month including the van that picks him up from kindergarten and takes him to the site. If we lived in a slightly different neighborhood, or if we'd realized there was an open enrollment period, he could have attended the school that shares its campus with his after-school program and he could walk across campus instead of catching a van, but oh well - it is what it is, eh?

I'm glad you've found one that works... have you had a chance to talk to them about Caitlyn at all yet?

I wish I could pay that for daycare/preschool. Right now though Preston's 200 a week is much better than his $1355-1500 a month in New York!
I really hope it works out for you guys. Caty will love being with the other children!

Bummer that the Head Start program didn't work out! I hope you like this new preschool though. Can't wait to hear all about it! Good luck with speech also!

That Caty is so stinkin' cute! Good luck with the preschool situation! It's a bummer that Head Start didn't work out for you, but hopefully this new one will be good.

I am utterly disgusted by the cost of quality child care. I taught preschool before having Caty, but was working for a low-income school district that most of the families childcare was subsidized. I just cannot believe how much some of you are paying, it's horrible. Now these programs that I came across are all full day programs, which are running about $150 or so a week. Yes the one that we are going to look at is only $150 a month - but it is only Tuesday and Thursday morning for about 3 hours. We know that this is a great price, but on the other hand, couldn't really pay much more than that, seeing as I am a stay at home mom and Scott is a teacher. You all know how underpaid teachers are. I'll let everyone know what I think of the preschool after our visit - we'll probably go tomorrow morning.

I hope the visit went well with the preschool today! Good luck with the speech therapy too!
